Other Retirement Facts:
To get to know Phil a bit more, we ask a few questions to find out how he got to where he is today. From his influences and hobbies to what he likes most about the job, today’s podcast is all about what makes Phil tick.
His parents had a big impact on his view and understanding of money. His father got into a few different businesses, including owning rental properties. Phil jokes this is why he doesn’t have rental properties, because he saw they can be a challenge. He also learned a lot of work ethic from his grandparents as they worked on the farm on the weekends, in addition to a job during the week.
The entrepreneurial spirit was certainly passed onto Phil. He started out as a CPA and then realized he wasn’t cut out for the corporate world. He started his own practice but found himself being asked by clients to help on the financial side and get more involved in retirement planning, in addition to the taxes. He did both things for about 10 years and then decided to transition to financial services to better benefit his clients. As a financial advisor with a CPA background, he’s able to offer a comprehensive look for your financial plan.
A lot of financial advisors can get lost in the exact formula or recipe to do something, but Phil has found it’s good to have a broader understanding in order to customize plans. Phil shares some of the experts he’s learned from in the industry. If he could fix anything in the industry, it’s those rules of thumb. He likes to have a plan and run the numbers to find out how to make it work, instead of falling back on general rules.
As a fiduciary, Phil’s work is very important as he helps people make decisions about their life’s savings. He shares what is more gratifying about his job as he works with different clients. At the end of the day, he always comes up with a workable plan with his clients.
